Arete specializes in individual adolescent and young adult psychotherapy. Arete clinicians have received advanced training in the psychological treatment of young persons, and are skilled in the application of many established psychotherapy models. Arete clinicians perform comprehensive intake assessments and develop individualized treatment plans for all clients entering psychotherapy. Families play an integral role in the therapy of young clients, as families can help apply and support what clients learn in individual therapy. In particular, parents can make adjustments at home to help facilitate positive behavioral change. Consequently, Arete clinicians routinely meet with parents to address young clients’ treatment and progress.
Family and Extended Family Psychotherapy
Arete clinicians have extensive training and experience providing family and extended family psychotherapy, the aim of which is to address each individual family member’s needs while confronting challenges facing the entire family system. Similar to individual therapy, treatment is tailored to the unique needs of each family.
Group Psychotherapy
Arete provides group therapy for adolescents and young adults. Group therapy combines the power of peer-interaction and support with the experience of skilled group leaders to facilitate positive change. Group membership is based on age, treatment issue, and group therapy approach (interactive group vs. psycho-educational group where specific skills are taught). Examples of group topics include anger management, social skills, adoption, and substance use.
Educational Consulting and Placement Assistance
Educational consulting is available to assist families in identifying and obtaining resources designed to aid a struggling student’s academic development. Experienced Arete clinicians perform comprehensive evaluations of a student’s psychological, intellectual, social and emotional status, and then collaborate with families and schools to identify and apply specific treatment interventions within the current school setting. Placement assistance is also available when students require alternative academic arrangements, both in and out of state.
School Consultations
Arete offers a wide variety of services to local school districts. First, for students whose problematic behaviors undermine their academic performance, Arete clinicians collaborate with school personnel to develop behavioral intervention plans to be implemented in classrooms. Second, Arete staff offer on-site training for school personnel on child and adolescent mental health issues. Previous seminar topics presented include child resiliency, community resources for vulnerable children, and developing individualized treatment plans for adolescents and young adults with high-intensity and high-frequency problem behaviors. Finally, Arete can assist educational districts develop group prevention and intervention programs at the level of schools, specific classrooms, or in targeting at-risk student populations (e.g., anti-violence programs).
Psychopharmacology
Some young clients may benefit from psychiatric medications to augment their treatment. Arete collaborates with a network of adolescent and young adult psychiatrists and advanced practice nurse specialists who provide medication evaluations and management. To maximize the availability of such resources, Arete uses both affiliated independent practitioners as well as professionals working under contract with Arete.
